For the Quarter 3 Digital Portfolio, I will be explaining about my grade's field trip to Outward Bound Malaysia, Lumut.
Field Trip Pictures
Final Product
This is the poster I made with Rendy. This poster explains how you can survive a plane crash on an island in the tropics. It includes the environment of the island, threats and consequences that may harm you, avoiding these type of situations, an action plan that may help you and also the attributes of being a survivor. We cooperated and in the end, we were able to create an attractive and neat poster.
Field Trip Reflection
As I did not join the field trip, I will base my reflection on the experience I had during the survival course that was conducted on Wednesday, 4th of March 2015.
Reflecting on Your Adventure Experience
1. What were your greatest challenges, threats or fears during the Outward Bound course experience?
During the sample Outward Bound course, I experienced challenges such as lighting a fire, which is difficult because the wood we used were wet and there was so much smoke that made it hard to see and breathe; kayaking, which is difficult because we need to balance our body and we need to paddle the boat; cooking the food, which is difficult because the fire keeps on spreading instead of heating the pan; and also making the tent, which is difficult because it is hard to tie the bamboo together while holding the bamboo at the same time. The threats and fears I had was that I was really scared that when we were making the tent, it would suddenly fall on us; when we are cooking, the fire will spread and burn one of us; the smoke from the fire will suffocate one of us; and we will capsize when we are kayaking and we can not breathe.
2. What enabled you to get through these challenges?
We were able to finally turn on the fire by putting rocks around the fire to contain it and try to fan the smoke; working together on making the tent so that one will hold the bamboo and one will tie it; and paddling the boat slowly to avoid capsizing and losing balance.
3. What skills have you developed as a result of this experience?
The skills that I have developed are that I know how to turn on a fire when you only have a lighter and wood; I know how to contain a fire if it spreads; I know how to keep my balance when kayaking; and I know how to create a tent using bamboo.
4. How did someone else help you to grow and adapt?
The office boys from school helped us in every step of the way. An example is that they helped us in lighting the fire and helped us make the tent.
5. How did you see successful growth and adaptation in someone else?
I saw successful growth and adaptation in two of my friends, Greenspan and Dylan, because they were able to cook the food even though some difficulties were on their way. They were able to adapt to the situation as even though there was so much smoke and the fire kept on spreading, they contained the fire with rocks and in the end, they were able to finish cooking.
6. How did you contribute to the success of the group?
I contributed to the success of the group by collecting the Indomie and corned beef from everyone and I also cooked some parts of the food.
7. If you could do anything differently, what would it be?
I wish that next time, I could improvise and adapt to the condition instead of taking the easy way. For example, I could cook the food using the traditional method instead of the modern method. I also wish that next time, there will not be any lighters to light up the fire and there will be no one to help us but only guide us so that we may learn more about it.
8. How have you changed as a person as a result of facing these challenges? You may want to reflect on how your thought-patterns have changed, how you relate differently to others, how you get results, or how you show leadership in a challenging situation.
After facing these challenges, I learned that sometimes, we may go through some hard times that are out of our comfort zone. I need to adapt and improvise to the situation instead of taking the easy way. My thought-patterns have changed because now, I know that I must step out of my comfort zone and take risks. I should also persevere in every work that I do and not give up easily. I also learn that in order to achieve something, we need to cooperate with others. I need to show leadership by trying to keep the emotional parts of my friends relaxed such as by calming them down when they are panicking and try to keep them from being stressed.
